Washington, D.C. Man Facing Charges After Saving 11 Year Old Boy from 3 Pitbulls

On January 20, 2013 around 1 pm in Northeast Washington, D.C., an 11 year old boy was riding his brand new bike down a road when he encountered three unleashed and unsupervised pit bulls, who began to viciously attack him. A neighbor, seeing the boy in mortal danger, ran to his house to retrieve his handgun, which is legal to possess in D.C. with a permit, ran to the boy's aid and shot one of the dogs. A nearby bicycle cop, hearing the gunshot, rode over and shot the other two. The boy was evacuated to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, despite bites all over his body.

But here's where it gets tricky. Whether the firearm was properly registered and permitted is moot. The discharging of a firearm outside your own home in Washington, D.C. is a crime, punishable by up to one year in prison and a $1000 fine. Technically, this man who, seeing another person in mortal danger, in an act of pure selflessness, chose to act and help another person with no expectation of reward for himself, broke the law and should be viciously punished for its breach. I wonder if he can find David Gregory's lawyer for some more selective interpretation of the law.
