On January 17, 2013 around 3:40 am in Grand Forks, ND, Greg Kaml, 50, awoke to the sounds of footsteps on creaking floorboards on the second story of his house. Knowing his only roommate was still away on travels, Kaml grabbed his handgun and confronted the burglar, 24 year old Jared Christensen, as he came downstairs. Kaml tried to detain him for police, but when Christensen pulled a pistol out of his pocket, Kaml smashed him over the head three times with the butt of his pistol in an attempt to knock him out. It failed, leading Kaml to believe that Christensen was on some kind of drug. As Christensen tried to escape, Kaml feared that he was going to try to go raid somebody else's house while armed and people could get hurt; he warned him to stop and when he didn't, fired two rounds at him, which made him run away even faster.

Police found him in a nearby alley suffering from wounds to his head. He was arrested and charged with felony burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of marijuana. He already has several other convictions on his record, including burglary and driving with a suspended license.

No one else was injured in the altercation.
