On January 18, 2013 just before midnight in Oklahoma City, OK, five burglars tried to break into a single home when the female homeowner shot one with a gun. A friend of the homeowner, there at the time, shot another burglar, causing all five to flee. The two who were shot were taken by ambulance to a local hospital from a location a short drive away.

Interestingly, the news article this information was pulled from stops calling the two who were shot "burglars" and starts calling them "shooting victims." Let's be clear: There can only be one set of victims and one set of criminals per crime; if you start the crime, you are the criminal and the people you commit the crime against are the victims. If the victims turn the tables on you halfway through your crime, they are still the victims because they did not put themselves in the situation, you did.

None of the real victims were hurt in the incident. It should also be noted that had the homeowner not been armed, it would have been two victims, one man and one woman, trying to defend themselves against five burglars, likely all men, and the victims would not have stood a chance. These two groups of people were clearly mismatched from the start, but it was the presence of a gun that equalized them, leveling the playing field and while having a gun is not a guarantee against being murdered, raped, or robbed, it at least gave the victims a chance.
