On September 13, 2009 in Lewes, DE, a 74 year old homeowner returned home to find a strange car in his driveway and his front door kicked in. When he approached his side door, he was met by two home invaders, who tried to make excuses for their presence before advancing on him. One of the invaders grabbed a landscaping tool while the homeowner armed himself with a nearby machete and swung on one of the invaders, cutting him several times on the arm. Undeterred, the invaders regrouped for another advance on the much older man, who finally drew his handgun and shot the other invader in the abdomen. Finally, after being confronted with a gun, both men quickly fled.

One was found shortly at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach; the other was found in his home with slashes to his arms. Both are being charged with 2nd degree burglary, 2nd degree conspiracy, menacing, and criminal mischief; they're lucky that there aren't more charges.

The 74 year old homeowner was unharmed in the incident and will not be charged.
