More proof that the police are not there to protect you at the moment of the crime, but rather to protect through passive deterrence and post-crime investigations. On January 31, 2013 around 4:30 pm in Albuquerque, NM, a homeowner spotted multiple burglars attempting to enter his home. He immediately called police and waited. And waited. Finally, one burglar actually made it inside his house and the homeowner shot him in the stomach. The man was able to flee with the help of another accomplice, a man, to a getaway car, driven by a woman.

As police arrived at the house, a local hospital reported a 19 year old man coming to the emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound. Police were able to arrest the woman, but the second man had disappeared. So in the time it took police to get to this guy's house to protect him and stop a crime, burglars were able to break in, get shot, flee on foot to their car, drive to the hospital, walk into the ER, and someone at the hospital was able to evaluate his wound, pick up a phone, and call the police.

No one else was injured in the incident by the actions of the homeowner.
