Throwback: Armed Teen Mom Protects Infant Son Against Intruder Armed with Knife

It was on new year's eve 2011-2012 when it seemed like one young woman's life couldn't get much worse. Eighteen year old Sarah McKinley was home alone with her 3-month old son, mourning the death of her husband from lung cancer on Christmas Day less than a week before when two men began trying to break into her home in Blanchard, OK.

McKinley instinctively put her infant son in his crib and gave him a bottle to keep him quiet, picked up the phone and dialed 911 while she pushed a couch in front of her door to try to slow the men down for police. Police, however, as usual in these types of crimes, were not close enough to prevent the men from getting into the home.

She told the 911 operator that she had two guns and asked if it was ok to shoot them if they came in. The operator told her that she could not tell her that she could, but that she should do whatever she needed to do to protect herself and her baby. She had a 12 gauge shotgun, but it hadn't been shot in a long time and she wasn't sure it would function, so she grabbed a handgun as well.

When the first intruder, 24 year old Justin Shane Martin, busted through the door, throwing the couch out of the way, she saw what she thought was a gun in his hand. From 22 feet away, she fired one shot, killing him. Martin's accomplice, 29 year old Dustin Louis Stewart, ran away as soon as he heard a gunshot, but was caught later by police and in addition to the aggravated burglary charges, will also face first degree murder, since he was an accomplice to a crime that resulted in a death. Police later found that Martin was armed with a large knife when he was shot and killed.

The district attorney ruled that McKinley was acting within Oklahoma law when she used deadly force to defend herself in her home. No one else was injured in the incident.
