It's funny how the pro-gun side can play on emotions too; an elderly man defending a young, pregnant woman with a child against a male rapist certainly creates some vivid imagery, does it not? On February 10, 2013 in Roswell, NM, a 24 year old pregnant woman and her three year old daughter were outside hanging laundry in her yard when her neighbor, 49 year old Larrell Stell, took off his shirt and started making sexual advances toward her. When she refused, he pushed her down. She scooped up her daughter and ran to her landlord's house next door, but Stell followed her, busting down the door, pushed her down again, and started punching the woman in the face.

The 87 year old landlord tried to break up the fight, but was no match against the much younger man. So he grabbed his gun and shot Stell in the torso. Stell turned on the landlord, who shot him again, finally causing him to leave the home, but he continued to pace around the outside.

It took police so long to respond that Stell stalked around the house for over an hour before driving himself to the hospital, where the police finally found him.

How does this get better? Stell was wearing an ankle monitor when this incident occurred. He had already been on probation for a previous battery conviction. When the law enforcement and criminal justice system don't hold criminals accountable or reasonably protect the citizenry, why should anyone be surprised at such a strong desire for people to defend themselves?
