Around 3 pm on February 17, 2013 in Sacremento, CA, an armed robber walked into a cell phone store, demanding money, phones, and other electronics. After bypassing the first employee he encountered, he made for a back office, where he encountered an employee with a legally concealed weapon, who shot and killed him in fear for his life and the life of other employees and customers.

Afterwards, customers expressed disapointment that the robber had to die, but a remarkable amount of common sense, contrary to most of their lawmakers. One customer opined that if someone has a legal permit to carry a gun, they should use it. Another insisted that everyone has a right to protect him/herself and wondered what might have happened if that employee hadn't had a gun, admitting that it could have been much worse.

This was the third time that someone has attempted to rob this particular store.

****************************UPDATE****************************************
The robber killed in this incident was a parolee who had already missed his preliminary hearing for a previous robbery charge that was to occur two days before. Here's a quick synopsis of some of the various charges he's been convicted indicted or convicted of in the past decade:

  • Robbery
  • Making criminal threats
  • False imprisonment
  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of a gun by a felon
  • Reckless driving
  • Evading police
  • Another count of possession of a gun by a felon
  • Participating in a criminal street gang
  • Felony drug possession
  • Car theft
  • Felony burglary
After being caught, tried, and released at least three different times for all of these charges, it's pretty difficult for anyone to say that calling 911 and hoping that no one was killed or injured while simultaneously hoping that the police would get there in time to capture him was more preferable to shooting him.
