At about 10:15 AM on the day before Christmas 2012, four armed robbers attempted a home invasion in the La Ventana Apartment Complex in Las Vegas, NV. It began with a knock on the door, where the resident, a woman, and an infant were residing. After the resident opened the door, they quickly forced their way into the apartment. The homeowner fought back, shooting at the invaders, hitting one, causing them to retreat to their getaway car. The three who were not wounded ditched their friend, who was transported to a local hospital but died shortly thereafter. The other three remain on the loose.

Despite the exchange of gunfire between the robbers and the resident, no one else was wounded in the altercation.

This will be tracked as a firearm homicide, but with the force that these invaders entered the apartment, with no regard for whether someone was home, the fact that the resident was armed and fought back may have actually prevented three homicides that day.
