On April 11, 2012 just before dawn in Santa Barbara, CA, a 911 call was placed to report a man, later identified as William Blair, 33, wandering the neighborhood in an "altered state of mind." Before police could arrive to investigate, he had already broken into one home, owned by a 54 year old man, who armed himself with a M-1 Carbine, a real military weapon, thousands of which had been used in actual combat in WWII. He warned Blair to leave and even fired a warning shot into the floor, but Blair continued after the homeowner, who shot him in the leg and then stood guard over him until police could arrive.

Blair was taken to a local hospital before being charged with residential burglary, vandalism, and prowling. He has been a police nuisance for over two years and was on probation at the time of the incident.

No one else was hurt in the shooting.
