Just before 2 am on January 2, 2013 in Phoenix, AZ, a home invasion suspect was shot and killed. According to witnesses, the man, approximately 35 years old, first set off the alarm on one resident's truck before moving down the street trying doors and windows on neighboring houses. He then tried to break into a window where two young girls, aged 4 and 7 were asleep. The homeowner, armed with a gun, warned him to leave, but the man advanced on the front porch toward the homeowner, appearing to pull a weapon from his pocket. The homeowner shot him three times. Police arrived and the man was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Police say the homeowner will not be charged with any crime since he was just trying to protect his family.

Neighbors were grateful for him; one said, while talking to the 911 dispatcher, "He wasn't just protecting him. He was protecting us too."
