I had to share the love here, first, because this author sums up the finer points of the "assault" weapons issue very concisely, second, he's a self-professed liberal and I can appreciate people who are rational and eschew party lines when they are not reasonable; and third, because I've had a half dozen people send me this article, so obviously it's an effective and well-written piece. If you haven't seen it, the author sums up the irrationality of the "assault" weapons ban by discussing the poor reasons it was contrived, discussing misleading vividness, the arbitrariness of how characteristics are judged to add up to an "assault" weapon, the stupidity of the hate-affair with "high-capacity" magazines and "barrel shrouds," the virtual non-use of such weapons in crime, and the ineffectiveness of the ban due to grandfathering and "existing inventories."
