On December 27, 2012, a 51 year old man awoke at 2 AM to the sound of glass breaking in his condo on Place Rebecca Lane in Houston, TX. After he went to investigate, he discovered a man entering his home through a window. After giving a warning, the man feared for his life and shot him once in the head. The burglar was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but died several hours later, saving the taxpayers of the state of Texas hundreds of thousands of dollars in his public defender, prosecution, and prison board.

The case will be sent to a grand jury, as all such cases are, but the homeowner should be found to have acted within the law in defending himself and his property.

This will be entered as a firearm homicide, but it could just as easily be entered as a prevented homicide, a prevented burglary, and given the age of the 22 year old victim, it likely prevented dozens more possible burglaries/homicides.
