On June 23, 2012 at 4:30 PM, a 14 year old boy was home at 55th Avenue and Baseline Road in Phoenix, AZ looking after his siblings, aged 12, 10, and 8, when a woman rang the doorbell. The boy, not recognizing the woman, followed the instructions his parents had given him about not opening the door to strangers and he left it closed, not revealing to her that anyone one was home. However, after he heard a loud bang on the front door, he quickly moved his siblings upstairs and grabbed his father's handgun just before seeing an armed man bust through the front door and point a gun at him.

The boy reacted quickly, shooting the 37 year old intruder, who was severely injured but is expected to survive to face trial for aggravated assault and burglary. The intruder was not able to get a shot off and none of the children were injured.

This will go down as a firearm related injury in the stat book. But why aren't we also recording the fact that this use of a firearm possibly avoided the kidnapping or death of four children?
