Date: | June 5, 2013 | Time: | 1:30 pm | Location: | Lafeyette, LA |
Crime Prevented: | Armed Robbery, Assault, Murder
Description of Bad Guy(s): | Spencer James Francis, 43, and another accomplice, both masked and carrying handguns, busted through the front door of a home
Description of Good Guy(s): | Joseph Jean-Louis, 30, who returned fire in self-defense
Type of Gun Used: | Handgun
Outcome: | Francis was killed; his accomplice escaped in a vehicle. No one else was injured by the gunfire. Jean-Louis was arrested, but not for shooting at the two intruders, but because he was in possession of schedule II controlled substances in the home. I'm not saying Jean-Louis is a good guy, but arbitrary government regulations do nothing but increase possible profits on drug trafficking, thereby encouraging increased risk and violence in its distribution. This will get entered as a statistic about gun crime, but what would have really stopped this crime? More background checks that wouldn't have stopped these drug dealers from obtaining their most-likely illegally stolen guns? Or ending the failed "war on drugs" and allowing the free market to bankrupt violent dealers?
