On February 4, 2013 around 7:45 am in Las Vegas, NV, a 72 year old man was in his home when three armed intruders broke into his house. The homeowner went to his bedroom and secured his readily-available handgun. When the intruders entered his bedroom, the homeowner fired, striking one of the intruders. The police captured one of the intruders as he tried to flee the scene in a car; a second, described as a hispanic male, was last seen sprinting out of the neighborhood; the third was found dead in the homeowner's backyard with a handgun laying next to him.

Criminals like to prey on the elderly, assuming that they are weaker and slower than younger targets. However, a gun tends to put everyone on a more level playing field and gives everyone a fighting chance.
